The Refugee Project: An atlas of forced migration
Hyperakt co-founder Deroy Peraza and I were invited to present at a data visualization conference for UNHCR in Geneva, and were inspired by the stories hidden within the statistics. How could the United Nations refugee agency better map the migrations of the displaced over time?
I managed a cross functional team to create an interactive map of refugee migrations around the world in each year since 1975 based on UNHCR data. Quantitative data is complemented by qualitative narratives describing the histories of the major refugee crises. By providing key insights into the overall content structure and narrative, I helped ensure that the map would be engaging to a broad audience.
After it's launch, the project was featured across the globe including The Atlantic, Fast Company, Le Monde, El Pais, and Corriere della Sera.
